This is a super heavyweight hoodie made to exactingly high standards that will keep you warm and stand the test of time, just like the story behind it.

The design features Nicolas Poussin’s painting ‘Et in Arcadia ego’ (c. 1637–38), held in the Louvre, also known as ‘Les Bergers d'Arcadie’ or ‘The Arcadian shepherds’, showing a blissful pastoral paradise with idealised shepherds and some random woman, possibly a shepherdess, gathered around an austere tomb, bearing the inscription ‘et in arcadia ego’. This hoodie depicts Poussin’s second version. His earlier picture (c. 1627) is held at Chatsworth House. (for that one, see our long sleeve black t-shirt).

‘Et in Arcadia Ego’ translates as ‘even in Arcadia I exist’, a memento mori reminding us that even in the blissful utopia of Arcadia, death is inevitable. It’s a call to live immediately! Then again, it could also just be a classical baroque version of ‘I woz ere’. Nonetheless, this hoodie wears the message on its sleeve. ‘even in paradise, there is Death’.

Poussin’s picture and the phrase are both packed with esoteric riddles that conceal ancient conspiracies. ‘et in arcadia ego’ is also an anagram of ‘l Tego Arcana Dei’, found in the warning for the Maranatha puzzle and translated as ‘begone! I conceal the secrets of god’.

Interesting.

Conspiracists argue that poussin was a sort of all-knowing panjandrum within a secret society. He painted into this picture a cryptic key that could be read only by other members, a shadowy group called the ‘Priory of Sion’, who are around us even to this day; mysteriously, silently biding their time, protecting the bloodline of Jesus Christ and his supposed wife mary magdalen, plotting to rule over a theocratic and neo-chivalric European super-state.

Unlikely.

Templars. Rosicrucians. The holy grail. It gets better; occult reading treasure hunters claim poussin used a hidden geometry pointing to real-world places; a pentagram mirroring the geographic positions of templar castles and other landmarks not far from a village called Rennes-le-Chateau in the south of France, enclosing the area where the descendants of christ secretly settled. A concealed plan of the interior of the Great Pyramid at Giza. A map that points to a templar treasure horde hidden on Oak Island in Nova Scotia. A tie through ‘sacred geometry’ with a destroyed planet from which a group of alien settlers came to live on earth.

Fact.

It’s a hair-curling rabbit hole of mind-bogglingly eccentric gobbledegook. But now, wearing this masterful hoodie, you can strike out in search of ‘the truth’ and make your own spurious case, piecing together random unrelated pieces of information to construct your own concrete theory.

Soft, smooth, strong. It’s the hoodie for ‘life’ you always knew was out there, but never quite found, even though it feels like you’ve had it forever, and ever…

Amen.
